SHERCLIFFE FAMILY
JOHN SHERCLIFFE was transported in 1638, but was also listed as
an "immigrant" in 1646. Anne & Mary Shercliffe, his daughters, were
transported in 1657.[l] He married first Ann Spinke, sister of Henry
Spinke, by 1647- and second, Ann Goldsborough by 1651. He died
c1668. John was the youngest of four sons of the Shercliffe family of
Whitly Hall, Ecclesfield, Yorkshire, b. 28 November,1618.[2] He first came to VA
c1638 on the ship "Unity" from the Isle of Wight, transported by Mrs.
Mary Throughton. No land patent was found in VA for either John or
Mary. Two entries, however, in Skordas reveal Mrs. Mary Throughton,
widow, immigrated to St. Mary's Co. in 1638, the same year John
Shercllifee was transported.[3) Four children were listed in John's will:
John Jr., William, Mary and Ann Shercliffe. Deposition dated 1658
stated he was 40 years old. On Oct 14, 1651, John Lewger demanded
land for transporting various persons including Ann Goldsborough,
Shercliffe's second wife.[4] In 1657, John demanded land for
transporting a servant which Robert Cole had assigned to
daughters.151 John witnessed will of John Greenwell of New Town
Hundred on March 27, 1658. In 1659, John Thimbelby named John
Shertcliffe [sic], his wife Anne, and sons John & William Shercliffe as
legatees of his estate.[6]

In the Name of God Amen
Know all men by these presents that I Sarah Manning widow of Joseph Manning deceased of the County of Perry in the State of Missouri being weak in body but of sound and disposing mind and not expecting long to live in this world am anxious to settle my temporal concerns

Do in the first place give and bequeath my soul to God who made it and my body to the.dust from whence it sprung .

And I also give and bequeath all my property consisting of the following articles

To Wit
one sorrell horse Two cows & their in crease Three
bed steads, beds and bedding And also all my property
of whatsoever nature or kind that I have at my death the
property taken by me as my dower of my late husbands
estate as also my absolute property

And do give and bequeath the same to the following named persons to wit

I do give and bequeath unto my daughter Mary Layton,
widow of Zachariah Layton the one fourth part of all my
property,
I also do give and bequeath unto my daughter Sarah
Tucker the one fourth part of all my property I also
do give and bequeath unto Benedict Manning heir of
Ezekiel Manning deceased the one fourth part of all my

one fourth part of all my property & if I should dye

And it is further my will and desire as there is but little property that the said Executors may be permitted to make partition of the same among the same Legatees namely Mary Layton, widow Sarah Tucker, Benedict Manning and William Leander Brewer and that each and every one of them have an equal shear of all my property And it is further my will if the said Executor do both refuse to act that the County Court may appoint two or more suitable persons to make partition of the said property among the said Leatees equally

I reserve enough of my property for my funeral expenses under the direction of my Executors

And it is further my will and desire that the County Court may and will permit the Executors aforesaid to make the said partition among the said Legatees without incuring the expence of taking out letter testamentary as it would go far towards consuming the estate and if the said Executors cannot agree in making partition afforesaid then they have power to call in a third person

Sarah Ann Manning's will and estate settlement is in Perry County Probate File 1279. Thomas Edward Riney, son of Sarah Ann, was the administrator of the estate. The final settlement was dated 8 November 1848.

The ones listed in her will: Mary (Riney) Layton, widow of Zachariah was Sarah Manning's daughter by Thomas Riney her first husband. Sarah (Hayden) Tucker was her daughter by Clement Hayden. Benedict Manning was grandson of Joseph Manning. William Leander Brewer was grandson of Joseph Manning.

Sarah (Shircliffe) Riney, Hayden, Manning was 24 years old when her first husband Thomas Riney died in MD, leaving her with three children. She must have married Clement Hayden shortly after Riney died and they were married 22 years before his death in 1811. They had nine children that I have a record of. At the age of 46 she had lost two husbands and had twelve children. At the age of 69 she married Joseph Manning. They were married 9 years. She died the next year.

Children were: Sarah Ann Hayden, James Hayden, Margaret Hayden, Anna Hayden, Clement (jr) Hayden, Susannah Hayden, John Hayden, Benedict Hayden, Elizabeth Hayden.

She was married to Thomas Edward (II) Riney about 1780 in St. Marys Co., Maryland. Children were: Ann Riney, Mary Riney, Thomas Edward (III) Riney.

She was married to Joseph Manning on 12 May 1834 in Perry co, Missouri.
