bullet John Coppin(1) was born in 1530 in Deal Parish, Kent, England. He died on 20 May 1581 in Charles Parish, York Co. Virginia. St. Leonard's Church, Upper Deal, is a large building, which, despite many repdirs, restorations, and alterations, still retains some Norman characteristics. It contains a brass for Thomas Boys, d. 1560, who attended King Henry VIII. at the siege of Boulogne. The rectory of St. Leonard's, valued at 429, is in the patronage of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Barbara's Note: We visited St. Leonard's Church in March 1997. The Coppin
tomb is in the center isle of the Church, and is now under the alter. Only

the top portion is visible with the name of John Coppin showing. The church
is in good repair and is still in use.

Remainder to his sons William and John in like tail successively. To John his son in like tail his messuage and lands in Ripple and his messuage and ldnds in East Langdon, Westcliffe, Gustone and Bewisfelde. Remainder to

From, "The Coppyris of Kent" a genealogy, a copy is in the library of The Center for Kentish Studies, Maidstone, Kent, Eng. "Barbara's Note: Joshua Coppyn became the first Mayor of Deal. In St. Leonard's Church in Deal, a tomb inscription with John Coppin (probably William's son or father) along with other Coppins is inlaid in the church Iloor, now mostly under the alter. Only top part of inscription could be seen when we were in the church in March 1997. The church is still in use.
The Manor of Deal Prebend was a short distance from this church, and has been torn down. On.ly the gatehouse remains.)

1631 William Coppin of Canterbury, gentleman, son and heir of Mary Boys (Dene-Coppin) late of Beaksbourne, widow, deceased, a right over the manor Wootton to Thomas Coppin, gentleman, eldest son and heir of John Coppin late of Beaksbourne, gentleman, deceased. 21 Sept 1631. Mary died March 1616 daughter of William Dene, buried St. Leonard's Church of Deal, in middle tomb of Coppins. (Mary Dene Coppin married second, Thomas Boys.)


William Coppin,father of Martha, was buried at ST. Georges on March 18,1633.The Wynn's say that a memorial tablet to him is in St. Georges,and is mentioned in Hasted's History of Kent,vol.4,p. 170. Thje Wynns also note that William Coppin was also probably the grandson o f John Coppin,member of Parliament from Canterbury from 1553-54. Parents: John Coppin and Mary Denne.
